Jane Harrington

Jane Harrington moved here with her husband, Bill, in 1984 soon after their first child was born. Originally from England, Jane took to Historic West Adams with a zeal for restoration that spanned four major projects. Many young creative couples like Jane and Bill inspired by the idea of rescuing an old house started on their own restoration projects. Soon they became a force within this well-established community.

“I really felt that the long-time neighbors had fallen into a slump of being told that they lived in an old, run-down house and they had ceased to value what they had,” Jane remembers. “Once they saw the potential, they rallied around the old homes and watched as their houses gained value and historic context. In many parts of the city, gentrification has been a divisive issue, but here in West Adams we all value the community history as well as the architectural history.” 

Jane acquired her real estate license and joined City Living Realty. She still specializes in Historic West Adams homes. “Our two major architectural styles are both sought after and sturdily built,” she says. “The Craftsman houses are so closely tied to present day concepts of space and simplicity, that we are lucky to be able to take advantage of the wisdom from another era. Buyers also have the option of re-creating the world of Victorian splendor and intricate craftsmanship, the qualities of stain glass and sparkle of chandeliers. Each style can be cared for and passed onto a future generation to bring graceful living into the next century.”

Jane has been involved in preservation efforts to not only save the architectural heritage of Los Angeles but also to preserve the history of the people who lived here. Currently she is working with other community residents who are advocating to save the Engine House No. 18, one of Los Angeles’s earliest fire stations, for public use. She explains, “A neighborhood should have public places that reflect the character of the homes around it.”

When not selling homes in West Adams, Jane is an avid horsewoman who maintains an equestrian property in Central California.
